Ministerial Advisory Council on Disability - Independent adviser to the WA Minister for Disability Services - Keeping government informed

Tom Armington

1st Term: 01/08/2013 – 31/07/2015
2nd Term: 29/06/2015 – 28/06/2017

At the age of 15, Mr Armington was involved in a motorcycle accident which resulted in critical injuries and left him blind in both eyes and a paraplegic, reliant on a wheelchair for mobility. He completed high school and a four year computer science degree at the Florida State University, a process which gave him considerable insight into the difficulties those with disabilities face in completing their education.

Securing employment as a graduate proved challenging and he started his first full-time job in 1990. Over the next decade he advanced his career as a computer programmer through various employers in Florida and Georgia.

In 1999, he moved to Australia where he has since married and become an Australian citizen. Gaining employment in Australia has, unfortunately, been an almost fruitless process to date, despite his involvement with various disability employment agencies. This has motivated him to do more to address the barriers people with disabilities face in Australia, especially with regard to employment.
